A school psychologist paraeducator works under the direct supervision of a licensed school psychologist and has special training in conducting assessments and working with children, teachers, and parents.  School psychologist paraeducators who are school psychology practicum students, placed in the district with cooperation of their training institution, may participate in those activities normally carried out by the fully-endorsed school psychologist with the condition that all psychological evaluations, including testing and behavioral observations, must be reviewed and signed by the supervising psychologist. The supervising psychologist, as a member of the IEP team, must maintain responsibility for special education decisions. 

 

A Day in the Life

  • Assist the assigned school psychologists in administering and scoring individual tests to help determine specific academic and behavioral needs of students.
  • Provide the assigned school psychologists observational data to be used when determining individual needs of students.
  • Gather a variety of assessment data for purposes of evaluation and record review.
  • Assist the assigned school psychologist in consultation and intervention activities in both general and special education settings for students ages 3- 21.
  • Assist the assigned school psychologists in ensuring that timelines are met.
  • Assist the assigned school psychologists in scheduling meetings, obtaining educational records for students new to the district, and preparing forms and paperwork prior to scheduled meetings.
  • Maintain an inventory of materials, tests, protocols, and supplies for the assigned school psychologists.
  • Communicate effectively with students, teachers and parents.
  • React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Support the value of education.
  • Support the mission and philosophy of the Maize Special Education Cooperative.
  • Adhere to district, state and federal confidentiality policies.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
  • Comply with all other district policies, rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Successful Candidates

  • Familiar with technology and software. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Desire to continue formal education and career improvement in the field of school psychology.        
  • High school diploma or equivalent,         
  • Baccalaureate degree preferred, preferably in psychology or education
  • Previous work with children recommended.
  • Those seeking practicum-related experience while serving concurrently in this role, pre-approval must be obtained from the college/university and the district.

 

Working Environment

  • This position generally requires 85% sitting, 5% standing, and 10% walking.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
  • Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach. Must be able to work in noisy, crowded and changing environments. 
  • Some travel required.
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations.
  • Must be regularly available and willing to work 40 hours per week, or such other hours as the district determines necessary or desired.
